Returning to the Quito region after 40 years, with other, more ‘ornithological’ eyes: what wonders I'd missed! The hummingbird gardens, waiting for the scarlet roosters at Victoriana (a bird that's my favourite!), the pre-dawn arrival of the insectivores at Sachatamia and Bellavista, finally the condors of Chakana (and the bear as a bonus!) and the Antisana National Park where I could only catch a glimpse of the rare Andean Ibis! What a delight ... with the desire to return and spend more time there (2 days in Sachjatamia and 2 days in Bellavista wouldn't be too much!).
Do you have any other general comments to make about your trip?
Sites easy to find with GPS, many thanks for providing the local telephone! Note: it seems that for around 40 Euros you can get roaming access with quite a lot of GB with Orange...
Did you notice any ‘unsustainable’ practices during your trip (in the accommodation, during excursions or otherwise)?
No, on the contrary, I found the involvement of local people in protecting their environment remarkable. Feeding practices are sometimes criticised... but without them there would be no concentration of birds and no viable green tourism for the locals, who would no longer have any reason to protect their land.
