Immerse yourself in the cloud forests of the Ecuadorian Chocó, one of the most biodiverse regions on the continent.
The Tandayapa Valley, characterized by its steep terrain and typical Chocoan cloud forest vegetation, is renowned for its incredible biodiversity. With over 400 bird species recorded in the area, including toucans, tanagers, and various species of hummingbirds, it offers unparalleled opportunities for birdwatching. Nature enthusiasts will also be delighted; beyond the exuberant flora, these high-altitude forests are home to a great number of mammals and reptiles.
The tour will begin from the Ecuadorian capital to the confluence of the Alambi and Tandayapa river valleys, where we will explore one of the country's oldest hummingbird gardens. We will then ascend to the Bellavista Reserve to discover one of the most emblematic conservation projects in the Chocó region. There, we will encounter a fascinating variety of flora and fauna, from majestic tree ferns to colorful heliconias and orchids, along with a multitude of bird species.
Early in the morning, you will leave your hotel and head towards the northwestern Andean region. The road that connects the Ecuadorian capital to the Pacific coast crosses different altitudinal gradients and very well-preserved Chocoan ecosystems. By descending through these different forests, we will be able to better understand the importance of the Andean topography and its multiple effects on the region's high biodiversity.
After 1h30 we will arrive at the confluence of the Alambi and Tandayapa river valleys, where we will have a first stop. One of the oldest hummingbird gardens in the region was built here. Several of dozens of species have been recorded in this small garden, where floral arrangements and feeding stations are the greatest attraction for both observation and photography.
Later, we will start our ascent along the Tandayapa valley to the cloud forests of the Bellavista reserve. The largest proportion of this private conservation area, anchored in the Andean foothills, consists of a large cloud forest inhabited by a surprising and photogenic flora and fauna: tree ferns, reptiles, Orquids, Tayras, heliconias, amphibians and a multitude of birds. Enjoy a delicious lunch and birdwatching in Bellavista, before traveling back to the capital.
