Explore the beautiful Antisana Highlands National Parc and discover the heart of the eastern Andes mountain range, a protected area with typical "parámo" highland vegetation and home to a variety of wildlife.
Today we will visit the Antisana Reserve, named to the Antisana volcano of 5758 meters high, making it the fourth highest volcano in Ecuador. The reserve is easily accessible from Quito, located about 50 kilometers east of the capital.
At the nesting cliffs as well as in the reserve, we will search for the iconic Andean condor. Then we will hike around la Mica Lake, a mirror that reflects the magnificence of the volcano and is a vital water source for Quito. Along the way, we will get to know the unique, rugged landscape and try to spot its inhabitants.
Today we leave for a journey through the breathtaking landscapes of the Antisana Volcano Reserve, nestled in the heart of the high Ecuadorian Andes. Our adventure begins with a scenic drive through the inter-Andean valley, gradually climbing the Cordillera Oriental. Along the way, we stop to admire the nesting cliffs of the Andean Condor, an impressive sight.
When we reach the high plains of the reserve, our search for the emblematic Andean Condor continues. But that's just the beginning. Our next stop takes us to the tranquil shores of Laguna de la Mica, where we are greeted by a symphony of aquatic birds. From graceful grebes to colorful ducks and rather rare short-eared owls, the lagoon is home to amazing birdlife. Amid the breathtaking scenery of the Antisana volcano, we enjoy a delicious lunch on the high plateau, taking in the serenity of our surroundings. But our journey does not end there. The afternoon is dedicated to an immersion in the rich biodiversity of the region.
As we move deeper into the reserve, we may encounter elusive animals such as the Andean Fox and the elegant Andean White-tailed Deer, or even dwelling Spectacled Bears. Their presence attests to the resilience of life in this rugged Andean landscape. As the day draws to an end, we descend to the lower parts of the reserve, where vibrant hummingbirds and melodious songbirds await our final observations. With memories in our heads and hearts, we leave the Antisana Reserve behind and return to the capital through the inter-Andean valley.
